When the immune system of the body is weak, then we are more susceptible to viral attacks. Such is the case with cold sores or fever blisters.
It sometimes appears after the person has had colds or flu. But it is usually contracted through physical contact from infected individual. While the occurrence would only take 10 to 14 days, this viral infection is very contagious. So it’s really important to find a cold sore home remedy.
Cold sores are actually infections of the lip that is caused by herpes simplex virus. In most cases, blisters form on the lips, some area of the mouth, or some parts of the face. Initial symptoms include tingling or itching of the skin around the infected area. As the infection progresses, the infected part of the skin will turn red and lesions will appear.
These sores usually heal within two to three weeks, although the herpes simplex virus does not leave the body. The virus remains dormant in the facial nerves and may trigger periodic infections especially in asymptomatic people. Most of the time, the reoccurrence develops in the same area where the original blister occurred.
Some people find relief by applying ice onto the affected area for up to ten minutes every hour at the onset of the cold sore. This, according to some, can prevent the further development of blisters.
Pressing tea bag to the affected area is also said to be an effective home remedy because the tannic acid in teas has antiviral properties. Lemon balm extract is another cold sore home remedy. It can reduce the symptoms while speeding up the recovery period.
Some experts have suggested applying a solution of coconut oil, dettol, and carbonic acid (which can be replaced with tea tree oil) on the infected area at least once a day. Not only is it good for cold sores, it is also a good alternative medicine for boils, mosquito bites, and other minor itching.
Common salt can also be used as a remedy. Simply put some powdered salt on your finger and then gently press it against the infected area. Doing this for up to three days (twice a day) will speed up the healing period.
A cold sore home remedy works for minor symptoms. However, be sure that you are not allergic to any of the ingredients used in these remedies before attempting to use them. Recurring cases, on the other hand, need more serious treatment. Always consult your doctor to see if there’s a different kind of treatment that could best work for you.
